That FP post about Australians impounding improperly lifted trucks made me think about something again. Police seem to have a hate boner for modified cars, yet all manner of lifted trucks never get ticketed. I know for a fact that there were strict rules in Colorado about vehicle lifts, that so far as I could see were never enforced. Now I’m wondering if it has to do with profiling.

Do police not care about brodozers because they’re usually driven by white bros, and redneck wannabes? Lifted jeeps because 90% of the time it’s white guy driving? But within the tuner realm, there are certain styles of car that are decidedly not “white” or at least, even if it is a white boy he’ll surely be some stuck up city kid, and not a “good ol’ boy” from the country who deserves a pass .

I wonder because when I lived in Colorado, I would say about 90% of the lifted vehicles there did not meet the requirements that were in the vehicle code, and I never saw or heard of anybody getting ticketed for violations . On the other hand, tuner cars were always cop magnets. I only heard of one third-hand story about somebody being ticketed for their lift, and they had been pulled over for something else, and the cop was scanning the code to see what he could get them for while he was there. I have always wondered why lifted vehicles seemed invisible to cops who generally always seemed to spot an illegal ground effect light or some other much less dangerous, trivial nonsense, - perhaps this is part of it.

tuner cars was mostly a younger crowd, compared to trucks which were older and more chances to be the cops pals....

How do you know this? Do you work for the police force? I ask because I always see claims on “why didn’t they have this happen to them when this is a rule ”, but never know how people know.

Because any member of the public is allowed to read the vehicle code in its entirety. The one that I still remember regarded headlight height of lifted vehicles - mostly because cops will ticket lowered cars for headlights that are too low, in colorado headlights that were too high were (are? haven’t lived there for ten years, so it may be different now) illegal as well.

where i live the cops will mostly turn a blind eye to modded anything if you behave yourself and arent running any too obvious mods...(course if you do get pulled over and the cop doesnt like you you’re in the shit)

just one massive exception to that rule.... crappy hatchbacks with crappy body kits and window tints.... the cops have a proper hate boner for those

(minor caveat... the cops may turn a blind eye... but your insurance will likely throw a hissy fit if they find out.. depending on the mod/tune)

Where I live trucks get just as much attention from the police as modified cars, basically if your mods are obnoxious enough you will gt pulled over. I’ve seen jeeps using light bars on public roads ge t pulled over, any car with blue or red LED’s on the front is getting stopped,

Same shit with Harley’s with straight pipes. I’ve never heard of someone getting a ticket for it but have been pulled over myself for having an exhaust that was too loud...even though it was a factory option exhaust.

In general, I think it’s easier to be outside headlight laws by being too low than it is too high. That being said, most the time stanced trucks get popped for having too much tire outside the fender, or obnoxious lighting. It really all depends on how much attention you are drawing to yourself. My last truck made way more power than my STI, lifted 4" on 35x12.50s with maybe 1" outside the fender and could smoke like a chimney. Driving like a sane human being the WRB STI with a giant wing draws way more attention.

I wish that were the case here. I see idiots using LED light bars on the road all the time.

That’s not what I’m asking. How do you know what people are pulled over for and how many are pulled over for?

I’m asking because it’d be interesting to model from a statistical stand point.

Read my sentence, that you quoted, again. It is entirely accurate. What you’ve inferred was not what I wrote.

Confirmation bias. I’ve heard of people getting tickets for bumpers too high and tires outside the fenders, I’ve never heard of anyone in a car getting tickets for anything other than tint. If there is any actual statistical difference, it’s possible that it’s where the vehicles are driven and the likelihood of them coming across an officer looking to ticket.  Not a whole lot of cops outside of town.

This was in Denver, lifted trucks were everywhere in town. Off-roading was more in my sphere of interest than tuner cars at the time, so I don’t think I noticed this trend out of any sympathy for lowered cars. Although perhaps because I used to moderate on automotiveforums, I may have heard more stories from tuners than from jeep guys.

So you have no proof or substantive facts other than confirmation bias and get upset when people are curious about a subject you started . Got it.

My apologies for inquiring. I was genuinely curious as a someone who tracks statistical anomalies for a living .

How do people get the statistics you track? Do they see them? Or imagine them? Because my sentence quite plainly tells you something important...

I get my data from a lot of things, it depends on what I’m researching; Bloomberg, fao.org , different .gov sites, etc.

In terms of data on the populous I’ve used government data (eg: consensus which is typically on a 6 month lag) , but I’ve never had access to police data. T hat type of data has always intrigued me . I was curious if you had something other than your own eyes but it seems your cool with small data points which only elicit a confirmation bias of which are  typically not accurate. Even if I misunderstood what you said, you could have explained.

I regret even asking, sorry.

boy racers... of the brave but dumb variety... with bodykits that are practically glued on

its a very specific kind of hatch hate... tho it spans all the brands

cops just know some of them cause trouble... so they target all of them

My post was an example of confirmation bias. Th ere’s a big truck show near me every year, and I’ve never hung around the tuner crowd, so I make note of the stuff that could affect me or people I know, and ignore/forget the stuff that won’t. Unless there’s actual statistical sampling saying lowered vehicles get more tickets, it’s all just down to personal bias, and everybody’s going to have a different experience with it.  I’ll fully admit my hearing about only citations written for lifted vehicles is likely the result of bias.

I think some of it is simply the volume, there’s so damn many of these things running around you can’t possibly stop them all. Combine that with their parent government (city, county, state, whatever) probably mandating that they focus more on what brings in the most revenue, plus most cops probably not being terrible well versed in the finer intricacies of vehicle regulations beyond the situations they encounter most frequently - speeding, lights out, unsecured load. As opposed to “your rear tires are protruding beyond your fender lip by 1/4 inches, regulations require the installation of fender flares”, like any job, there are parts of it that you kind of just don’t focus on because nobody seems to notice if you don’t and they aren’t crucial to your day to day routine.

the only thing the cops in my town care about is busting highschoolers smoking pot. less likely to be found in a 30k lifted truck.
